Radio phoenix WOXY held its yearly countdown of the top 500 songs that are still in its playlist over Memorial Day weekend, and its many quibble-worthy points ("Feel The Pain" makes the cut while "The Wagon" doesn't? read more »
Many people find it hard to tell the great from the godawful when it comes to 21st-century mainstream rock. To help figure out which is which, here's "Corporate Rock Still Sells," where Al "GovernmentNames" Shipley examines what's good, bad, and ugly in the world of rock and roll. This time around, he gives the year's rock charts a midway-mark overview.
It's time to see what the most-played songs and artists on rock radio have been from January to June. And surprise, surprise, the drummer/singer/guitarist you can't get away from is in the top 5 of each list—twice. First, the top songs: read more »
An edited version of this article originally appeared in the Nottingham Evening Post. On this tour, youll be performing your 1988 album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back in full. What made you decide to return to it? Well, its the twenty year anniversary, but I think this happens to be more of a promoters dream, to commemorate the album. So therefore its a challenge, because from Minute One, this album showed the world that hip hop was global. The minute the album opens up, you hear Dave Pearce talking about London. It was really raps first live album, as well as being all those other things that people call it. It has also found its way into quite a few of those Best Album of All Time lists that magazines like to compile. Why has it had such a lasting impact? read more »
Why do "top-notch rappers" always work with "cheesy rock'n'rollers?" Loving popular rap while hating popular rock must be difficult for those who want to keep it real while keeping it eclectic. Is it that Timbaland just hasn't heard the Flaming Lips? Does he need a critic's guiding hand? Or are they just being commercially cagey? And if the final product is good, is it ok to like it? Does that mean you like harlots like Nelly Furtado now? read more »
One of my first memories of hip-hop and rap was the Beastie Boys song "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" on the radio while I was still at school. I remember saving all my money just to buy the album Licensed To Ill and I now rate it one of my top 50 albums of all time. At the time I was listening to a lot of chart music and "oldies" but the Beastie Boys helped to change my musical tastes and now hip-hop and rap is probably my favourite genre.
The Beastie Boys are touring the swing states before Election Day because "every vote matters" there, Mike D told MTV News.
Beastie Boys have expanded their previously reported "Get Out and Vote '08" tour by a factor of two. The number of shows in swing states is at six now, thanks to the addition of dates in Charlotte, Dayton, and Youngstown (Ohio). The new shows will also feature sets from Sheryl Crow, Santogold, Norah Jones, and Ben Harper. read more »
